How to Register for the escience1 cluster

As always, use of campus facilities is subject to the usual Conditions of Use.

An online registration form, courtesy of Information Services, is available. (This replaces the old form). We hope that this will make registration a quick, easy, and painless procedure! If you have problems, contact us on the mail address mesc-cluster-approval. Read this check-list for filling in the form first : please note this was written for the old form, and may not be be precisely right for the new form:

  • Enter your staff payroll number or postgraduate registration number in the required box. Leading zeros are optional. This number is used to look-up your Information Services userid.
    • For postgraduates, this number is shown on your ID card as a 7 digit number.
    • For staff, this number appears on your pay slip, and on your ID card under the bar code (ignore the letters BUP at the start and the three check digits after a space at the end).
  • In the menu Please Select Unix System, choose eScience cluster.
  • Please add a very brief summary of your computing project in the Supporting Information box. For postgraduates, please include your supervisor's full name, telephone number and email address, so he/she can give informed support for this project.
  • You then need the Information Services userid and password you were issued with when joining the university. If you do not know or remember this, simply visit the Computing Help Desk in the Main Library or the Learning Centre, taking your ID card. As a test, try accessing this mail service.
  • You should allow a couple of hours after successful submission of the registration form before your account will be activated. For postgraduates, allow a little longer because the request goes through an approval check first (usually not more than 24 hours).
  • You will use the same userid and same initial password to logon to the cluster as used for the form, but remember that the cluster requires your userid in lower-case, and that the password you type-in is no longer than 8 characters. This oddity is a feature of the registration system.
  • When you have successfully logged on to the master node for the first time, you should change your password using the passwd command to something more obscure. The new password is not limited to 8 characters, and should ideally contain a mixture of upper and lower case letters, digits, and punctuation characters.

In cases of difficulty, or for further information, please contact the mesc-cluster-approval team.
